Hand-Knotted Macrame Wall Hanging — Cotton, 24-Inch
A 24-inch hand-knotted macrame wall hanging made by a co-op of seven weavers in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, where the craft has been practiced for over a thousand years. The cotton is 100% natural, undyed, and comes from a single mill in central Mexico that has supplied the co-op for thirty years. The piece is built around a wooden dowel, not a wire frame, so the tension holds over time without warping.
The pattern is the classic "cortina" style — a row of square knots at the top, a body of vertical cords, and a fringe at the bottom — but executed in a way that gives it a slightly modern shape. The result reads as bohemian but not as costume. We've hung it in a primary bedroom, a hallway, and a baby's room, and it works in all three.

The story We met the co-op at a textile fair in Mexico City and asked if they would make a version of their work specifically for us. They said no — they would send us the version they had already been making for a decade. We have not changed the design since.
