A 5'×7' hand-woven wool rug made on traditional pit looms in Bhadohi, India — one of the oldest rug-weaving regions in the world, where the technique has been passed down through the same families for nine generations. The pile is low (about 0.4"), which is the right height for a rug that needs to feel good under bare feet and still survive a dining table being dragged across it. The wool is handspun New Zealand fleece, which gives the yarn a natural variation in thickness that you only get from a non-industrial process.

We chose this construction because it solves the two problems most "soft" rugs have. First, the wool has a natural lanolin coating that resists stains — spilled red wine will bead up for the first few minutes, which is usually enough time to blot it. Second, the low pile means it doesn't shed the way a shaggy rug does. Some loose fiber in the first month is normal; beyond that, what you have is what you have.

The story We sent a sample of this rug to a tester in Vermont with a 60-lb Lab, a wood stove, and a drafty 1840s farmhouse. Two winters later she sent us a photo of the rug in front of the stove, looking better than it did the day it arrived. We don't ship test rugs back; we ship test rugs forward.
