Hearth Tips

A small library of care notes for the things we sell. None of it is sponsored. All of it is what we actually do at home.

Cast Iron

Seasoning

Rub a thin layer of flaxseed oil (or crisco, in a pinch) on a clean, dry pan. Bake upside down at 450°F for one hour. Let it cool in the oven. Repeat three times for a new pan.

Cleaning

Hot water, a stiff brush, a paper towel. No soap, no soak, no dishwasher. If food is stuck, boil water in the pan and scrape with a wooden spoon.

Storing

Dry it on the burner for thirty seconds after washing. Store with the lid off or with a paper towel between pans to let air move.

Linen

Washing

Cold water, mild detergent, gentle cycle. Linen does not need fabric softener — it softens on its own with use.

Drying

Line dry if you can. If you use a dryer, take it out while still slightly damp and hang it. Ironing is optional. Most of us skip it.

Ceramics

Daily care

Dishwasher is fine for most stoneware, but hand washing will extend the life of hand-glazed pieces. Avoid sudden temperature changes — don't take a frozen mug and pour boiling water into it.

Pet Beds

Covers

All of our dog bed covers zip off. Wash cold, tumble low. The inserts are sized to fit a standard cover so you can replace just the cover if your dog is hard on the fabric.
